Lionel Messi's seemingly imminent move to Paris Saint-Germain has had a direct knock-on to Paul Pogba's proposed transfer from Manchester United.
The Argentina captain's 21-year association with Barcelona ended earlier this week after 'financial and structural obstacles' made it impossible to renew his contract, despite the two parties reaching an agreement.
PSG remain interested in the World Cup winner, but are likely to move for him next year
Despite the 34-year-old agreeing to take a 50 per cent pay cut to remain at Camp Nou, Barca confirmed that they are constrained by the La Liga salary cap so have to let their star man go.
PSG have already signed Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi, Georginio Wijnaldum and Gianluigi Donnarumma in this transfer window and there were rumours they were looking to sign Pogba from United.
Yet the Athletic now claim the French giants will pursue a deal for the World Cup winner next summer once he has allowed his contract to run down and sign him on as a free agent.
Messi bid a tearful farewell to Barcelona after his 21-year association came to an end
Although it remains to be seen if this deal would suit Pogba and agent Mino Raiola, Messi appears to be closing in on a move to the Parc des Princes after confirming during a tearful press conference that a move was a 'possibility'.
He said: "That's honestly one possibility, to reach those heights, but I've got nothing confirmed with anybody.
"When the press release was published, I had a lot of calls and a lot of clubs were interested.
"At the moment, I've not got anything closed, but we are talking about a lot of things."
